Biocompatible membrane scaffold for the treatment of burns and wounds

Twak-M is a semi-porous, bio-absorbable and bio-compatible membrane that can act as a skin regenerationscaffold for cellular infiltration and vascularization in the woundbed. It is composed of a biocompatible and biodegradablepolymer, Poly lactic acid (PLA). PLA and its related class ofpolymers has been in clinical use for several decades in theform of various medical devices like absorbable sutures, bonescrews, dental implants etc. PLA is also widely used for makingscaffolds for tissue engineering purposes. This was the majorreason for selecting PLA as the material of choice for makingthe Twak-M membrane scaffolds for skin regeneration. Twak-M is made from PLA using a patent pending technology (PatentApplication No. 6609/CHE/2014 ).

The major advantage of PLAbased membrane as compared to existing options like collagenmembranes, which are derived from bovine and porcinesources is that it is free of the risk of transmissible viralinfections like BSE etc. Twak-M integrates into the wound bedand offers uninterrupted wound healing, since no repetitivedressing changes are required. It also provides an optimumenvironment for wound healing by providing the right moistureand pH levels. The scaffold like property of Twak-M providesfor a better regeneration of the skin with lesser scarring.

Bio-engineered Skin

Twak - C is a bio-engineered skin made by growing cells onthe Twak- M membrane scaffolds. The membrane scaffoldshave an architecture that is well suited for the attachment andgrowth of cells. We are currently growing human juvenilefibroblast cells on these membranes and these cell constructswill act like a dermal substitute for the deep second degree andthird degree burns. These cells has been shown to elicitminimal immune response in the recepient. A variety of growthfactors are secreted by these cells in the wound environmentand has a beneficial effect on the healing process. Anotheroption is to grow human mesenchymal cells on thesemembranes. Apart from severe burn injuries, Twak-C can beused to treat difficult to heal chronic wounds like diabeticulcers.
